    A big thing to add to Rich’s list is having a purpose. What is your community there to achieve? This might not matter so much for hobby communities where people gather around a shared passion and chew the fat, but when they are there to get stuff done it’s incredibly important, both because they want to get things done efficiently, and the community sponsors want to see their resources being used effectively.
